International shipping and customs
Everything you need to know about shipping internationally with ShipWave.
Customs declarations
International shipments require a customs form. ShipWave generates the correct form (CN22 for packages under $400, CN23 for higher values) automatically. You need to provide: a description of each item, the quantity, the value in USD, the weight, the country of origin (where the item was manufactured), and the HS tariff code.
HS tariff codes
Harmonized System (HS) codes classify your items for customs. They are 6–10 digit codes that determine applicable import duties. You can look up HS codes at hts.usitc.gov. While not always required by the carrier, providing accurate HS codes reduces the chance of customs delays or unexpected duty charges for your recipient.
Duties and taxes (DDP vs. DDU)
DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) means the recipient pays any import duties and taxes upon delivery. This is the default for most shipments. DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) means you, the shipper, prepay duties and taxes so the recipient has no surprise charges. ShipWave supports DDP pricing through the Landed Cost settings in Admin → Settings. DDP provides a better customer experience but costs more upfront.
Restricted items
Each country has restrictions on what can be imported. Common restrictions include food, alcohol, plants, weapons, and certain electronics. Carriers also have their own prohibited items lists (e.g., lithium batteries have special packaging and labeling requirements). Check both the destination country's import regulations and the carrier's prohibited items list before shipping.
Insurance for international shipments
International shipments carry more risk of loss or damage. USPS Priority Mail International includes $200 of coverage. For higher-value items, ShipWave lets you add additional insurance coverage up to $10,000 when creating the label. Claims for international shipments can take longer to process (up to 60 days).
