Comparing shipping rates
How ShipWave compares rates across USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, and regional carriers.
How rate comparison works
When you enter your shipment details (origin, destination, weight, and dimensions), ShipWave sends a request to all enabled carriers simultaneously. Within seconds, you see a complete list of available services with their prices and estimated delivery dates. Rates are sorted by price by default, so the cheapest option is always at the top.
Understanding dimensional weight
Carriers charge based on the greater of actual weight or dimensional (DIM) weight. DIM weight is calculated as:
Length × Width × Height ÷ DIM Divisor. USPS uses a divisor of 166, while UPS and FedEx use 139. This means a large, lightweight box may cost more than expected. ShipWave calculates DIM weight automatically so the rates you see already account for it.Residential vs. commercial addresses
UPS and FedEx add a residential surcharge of $4–$6 per package. USPS does not. ShipWave automatically detects address type, so the rates you see include any applicable surcharges. This is one reason USPS is often cheapest for residential deliveries.
Regional carriers
In addition to national carriers, ShipWave supports regional carriers like OnTrac (West Coast), LaserShip/Veho (East Coast), LSO (Southwest), Spee-Dee (Midwest), and GLS. These carriers often offer lower rates and faster delivery within their service areas. When available, regional carrier rates appear alongside national carrier rates in the comparison.
Using the free shipping calculator
You don't need an account to compare rates. Visit the Shipping Calculator page to get instant rate estimates. Enter your origin ZIP, destination ZIP, and package details. The calculator shows estimated rates from all major carriers. To purchase a label at the quoted rate, sign up or log in.
FAQs
Are the rates I see the final price?
Yes. The rate shown includes all base charges, fuel surcharges, and residential surcharges. The only exceptions are address correction fees (if the address is invalid) or additional handling charges triggered by unusual package characteristics.
Why do rates change for the same route?
Carrier rates are updated periodically (usually annually in January). Fuel surcharges also fluctuate monthly. ShipWave always fetches real-time rates, so you see the current price at the moment of your query.
Can I set a preferred carrier?
Not yet as a hard default, but you can sort and filter rates by carrier. The system remembers your recent selections to make repeat shipments faster.
