How to make a packing slip

  1. Add your store name and logo

Your logo and business name print at the top, with your return address and contact details underneath so customers know who to reach.
  2. Enter the order number and dates

Use the order number your customer sees in their confirmation email so they can match the box to the order.
  3. Fill in the ship-to address

Copy the customer’s shipping address. Add a separate bill-to address only if it differs, for example for a gift.
  4. List the items

Add the SKU, item name, quantity ordered and quantity shipped. If part of the order ships later, the difference shows the customer what is still to come. Turn prices off for gift orders.
  5. Add a note and return instructions

A short thank-you and clear return steps cut down on “where is the rest of my order?” and “how do I return this?” emails.
  6. Print and pack

Print the slip on letter paper, fold it and put it in the box on top of the items, or in a packing-list envelope on the outside.

Packing slip FAQ

What is a packing slip?
A packing slip is a document included in a package that lists the items inside. Customers use it to check their order, warehouse staff use it to pick and pack the right items, and it gives the buyer your contact and return details.
Is a packing slip the same as an invoice?
No. An invoice requests or records payment and always shows prices. A packing slip lists what is in the box and usually leaves prices off, especially for gifts. You can choose to show prices and order totals on this packing slip.
What should a packing slip include?
Your business name and logo, contact details and return address, the order number and date, the ship-to address, each item’s SKU and name with the quantity ordered and shipped, and optionally prices, a thank-you note and return instructions.
Should I put prices on a packing slip?
Leave prices off for gift orders and when a customer might be surprised by them; include them when the slip doubles as an order summary. The “Show prices” option adds unit prices, line totals and an order total.
Can packing slips print automatically for every order?
Yes. If you sell on Shopify, ShipWave’s app can print packing slips and discounted shipping labels for your orders together, instead of filling in a form for each one.
Is customer information stored or shared?
No. The packing slip and PDF are created in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to ShipWave. Device storage is off unless you turn it on, and “Clear saved information” removes it.
