How to create SKUs

  1. Start with a prefix

A short brand or product-line code, so SKUs from different lines never collide.
  2. Add attributes

List the values of each variant attribute, such as sizes or colors. Each value gets a short code.
  3. Check for clashes

The generator warns about duplicate or overly long SKUs. Use longer codes or a sequence number if needed.
  4. Export and label

Download a CSV for your store or spreadsheet, and print Code 128 barcode labels for your shelves.

SKU FAQ

What is a SKU?
A SKU (stock-keeping unit) is your own code for a specific product variant, such as a black medium T-shirt. Unlike a UPC, you create it yourself, and it should tell your team what the item is at a glance.
What makes a good SKU?
Keep it short, start with the most general information (brand or category) and end with the most specific (size or color), use only letters, numbers and a separator, and never start with a zero or reuse a SKU for a different product.
Is a SKU the same as a UPC?
No. A UPC is a GS1-licensed number used across retailers. A SKU is internal to your business, and the same product can have different SKUs at different sellers.
How long can a SKU be?
Many systems accept long SKUs, but Amazon limits seller SKUs to 40 characters, and shorter codes are easier to read on pick lists and labels.
Can I make barcodes from my SKUs?
Yes. Use “Make barcode labels for these SKUs” to open the barcode generator with your SKUs as Code 128 barcodes, ready to print on label sheets.
