How to make a barcode

  1. Choose the barcode type

Retail products use UPC-A or EAN-13; cartons use ITF-14; SKUs and shipping labels use Code 128; links use QR codes.
  2. Enter the value

For UPC, EAN and ITF-14, enter the number without the check digit to have it added, or the full number to have it checked.
  3. Set the size

Keep UPC/EAN at 13 mil for 100% size. Make bars taller for scanners at a distance.
  4. Download and test

Download SVG, PNG or PDF, or print a label sheet at 100% scale, then test-scan before printing in bulk.

The blank margin on each side of a barcode that scanners need. Don’t print text or lines in it.

A final digit calculated from the others so scanners can detect errors.
SKU
Your own stock-keeping code for a product. Build consistent SKUs with the SKU generator.

Barcode generator FAQ

Which barcode type should I use?
Use UPC-A (in North America) or EAN-13 for retail products with a GS1-licensed number, ITF-14 for cases and cartons, Code 128 for SKUs, shipping and warehouse labels, Code 39 when an older system requires it, and QR codes for links and longer text that phones should scan.
Can I get a UPC number here?
No. This generator draws barcodes for numbers you already have. Retail UPC and EAN numbers (GTINs) are licensed by GS1, which assigns company prefixes. Retailers and marketplaces such as Amazon check that a product’s GTIN belongs to the brand. For internal use, generate your own SKUs with the SKU generator and print them as Code 128.
What is a check digit?
The last digit of a UPC, EAN or ITF-14 number is calculated from the others so scanners can catch misreads. Enter the number without it and the generator adds it; enter the full number and the generator verifies it and tells you the correct digit if it is wrong.
What size should my barcode be?
UPC and EAN symbols are designed for a 13 mil (0.33 mm) bar width at 100% size, and GS1 allows roughly 80% to 200%. Code 128 labels usually work at 10 to 15 mil. Bigger bars scan more easily from a distance; always test-scan a printed sample.
Which file format should I download?
SVG and PDF are vector files that stay sharp at any size, best for packaging artwork and printing. PNG is a 300 dpi image for documents and websites. Label sheets print one barcode per label.
Can I print barcodes on Avery labels?
Yes. Choose a label size compatible with common sheets such as 30-up address labels (5160 layout), 10-up 2 × 4 in shipping labels (5163 layout), 80-up return address labels or 4 × 6 in thermal labels, add one value per line, and print at 100% scale.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Barcodes, images and PDFs are generated in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to ShipWave.

Shipping the products you label?

Barcodes are generated from the values you enter and checked against each symbology’s rules. ShipWave does not issue or register product numbers and does not guarantee that a retailer, marketplace or scanner will accept a barcode; always test-scan printed samples. GS1, UPC and EAN standards are maintained by GS1.

Label layouts are compatible with common label sheets; Avery® is a trademark of Avery Products Corporation, and ShipWave is not affiliated with it. QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED.
