Switching from Ordoro to ShipWave: Complete Guide
A channel-by-channel cutover plan that avoids the two things that actually go wrong: overselling during overlap, and discovering mid-move that you needed a feature ShipWave does not have.
Before You Start: Confirm This Is the Right Move
Do this honestly before you cancel anything, because the reverse migration is worse than the forward one.
Stop here and stay on Ordoro if you rely on any of the following:
- Purchase orders issued to vendors and tracked against receipts.
- Bills of materials or manufacturing orders for assembled products.
- Automated dropship routing to suppliers, or supplier feeds and vendor portals.
- Formal stocktakes, allocation, or warehouse transfer records.
- A non-Shopify source of truth — WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or Magento as your master catalog.
ShipWave has none of those. It assumes Shopify holds your catalog and inventory truth and works outward from there. This is the product boundary, not a roadmap gap.
Proceed if your Ordoro usage is mostly: buying labels, syncing inventory and orders with marketplaces, and processing returns. That overlap zone is large — many Ordoro accounts are effectively paying for shipping plus channel connections, which ShipWave covers at $0 for shipping and $59/mo for all channels.
Write down your current monthly Ordoro spend by app before you start. You will want the comparison later.
What Transfers, What Does Not
Set expectations here so nothing is a surprise on day three.
| Item | What happens |
|---|---|
| Marketplace listings | Unaffected. They live on the marketplaces, not in either app. You reconnect, you do not relist. |
| Product catalog | Comes from Shopify. Nothing to migrate. |
| Inventory quantities | Come from Shopify. Verify Shopify is correct before cutover — this is the step people skip. |
| Open orders | Finish them in Ordoro. Do not migrate in-flight orders. |
| Shipping history and tracking | Stays in Ordoro. Export it before you cancel. |
| Carrier rates | ShipWave ships on its own pre-negotiated accounts (USPS Commercial Plus, UPS, FedEx, DHL, plus six regional carriers) — you do not bring carrier contracts across. |
| Automation rules | Rebuilt manually. There is no import path between the two rule engines. |
| Package presets | Rebuilt manually. Screenshot your Ordoro list first. |
| Purchase orders, BOMs, dropship vendors | No equivalent in ShipWave. Export for your records. |
The most important row is inventory. ShipWave reads from Shopify, so if Shopify drifted while Ordoro was the operational source of truth, that drift becomes your live marketplace inventory the moment you connect a channel.
Step 1 — Reconcile Shopify Inventory
This step prevents the worst possible outcome, and it happens before you create a ShipWave account.
While Ordoro has been running, it may have been the system making inventory decisions. Shopify's numbers may not have kept pace. ShipWave treats Shopify as truth, so any variance becomes real the second a marketplace channel goes live.
- Export current on-hand quantities from Ordoro per SKU per location.
- Export the same from Shopify.
- Diff them. Investigate anything off by more than a unit or two — that usually indicates a sync path that has been silently failing.
- Correct Shopify, not Ordoro. Shopify is where you are going.
- If you run multiple locations, confirm Shopify's location-level splits match physical reality, not just the total.
If the diff is large or messy, do a physical count on your top SKUs by revenue first. It is far cheaper than overselling a hero product across five marketplaces on a Monday morning. Do not skip this because the totals look close — location-level errors net out to zero at the total level and still cause fulfillment failures.
Step 2 — Set Up ShipWave and Ship Parallel for a Week
Create your ShipWave account and connect Shopify. Catalog, orders, and inventory flow in without a data import.
Configure before you ship anything:
- Warehouses. Add every ship-from location with its exact address.
- Rates. ShipWave ships on its own pre-negotiated carrier accounts, so there is nothing to connect — but do compare its rates against what you were paying through Ordoro on real orders before you commit.
- Regional carriers. Turn on OnTrac, LaserShip, Veho, LSO, Spee-Dee, and GLS if they serve your lanes. They frequently beat the nationals on short zones.
- Package presets. Rebuild your box list from the screenshots you took.
- Printer and label format. Confirm 4x6 thermal output before your first real batch, not during it.
Then run parallel for about a week. Keep Ordoro active and paid. Ship a slice of your daily orders through ShipWave — a dozen a day is enough — and compare rates, label output, and tracking pushback against what Ordoro produced. A week of real orders surfaces the surprises.
Every ShipWave module has a 14-day free trial, so start the trials for modules you plan to use during this window rather than after cutover.
Step 3 — Cut Over Marketplace Channels One at a Time
This is where migrations go wrong. The rule is absolute: never let two apps sync inventory to the same marketplace at the same time.
Two systems both writing quantity to Amazon will fight, and the losing writes are invisible until you have oversold. Overlap for a single day can produce cancellations, defect-rate damage, and in the worst case a channel suspension.
The safe sequence, repeated per channel:
- Pick your lowest-volume channel first. Etsy or eBay is usually right; Amazon should be last.
- In Ordoro, disconnect that one channel — or at minimum disable inventory sync for it. Confirm it is off.
- In ShipWave, connect the same channel and link its listings to your Shopify SKUs. Consistent SKUs make this close to automatic; mismatches surface here and should be fixed in Shopify.
- Set the per-channel buffer and floor before enabling sync. This is a ShipWave control worth using: reserve quantity per marketplace instead of exposing one pooled number.
- Enable sync. Watch quantities on the marketplace for 24 hours and confirm updates land after a sale.
- Only then move to the next channel.
Your first channel is free, additional channels are $19/mo each, and $59/mo covers all of them — so the bundle wins once you are running five or more channels.
Budget a day per channel. Rushing this saves hours and costs weeks.
Step 4 — Rebuild Automation, Returns, and Modules
Automation rules do not transfer. Rebuild them deliberately rather than recreating everything you had — migrations are a good moment to delete rules nobody remembers writing.
Go back through your Ordoro rule list and reproduce only what is still doing work: carrier and service selection by weight or destination, warehouse routing, tagging, and presets tied to specific SKUs.
Then turn on the modules you need:
- Returns Automation ($29/mo) — replaces Ordoro's returns management and changes shape: a branded self-serve customer portal with USPS Label Broker QR codes so customers can skip printing, plus automatic disposition rules. Configure your return window and disposition rules before publishing the portal link.
- Wholesale B2B ($39/mo) — if you sell to dealers or wholesale accounts. Ordoro has no equivalent.
- Hazmat ($19/mo) — required if you ship lithium batteries or other regulated goods.
- Freight and LTL (free) — turn it on regardless; palletized quotes sit alongside parcel at no cost.
- Recovery and Audit Suite (25% of recovered funds, no monthly fee) — enable it early. There is no downside, since it only earns when it recovers.
Step 5 — Close Out Ordoro Cleanly
Do not cancel on cutover day. Give it a full billing cycle of stable operation first.
Before you cancel, export everything you might need:
- Shipping history and tracking numbers — you will want these for carrier claims and customer service on shipments already in flight.
- Purchase order history and vendor records, if you used the Inventory tier.
- Dropship vendor configurations and supplier contact details stored in the platform.
- Historical inventory snapshots, for accounting.
- Your automation rule list, as a reference in case something was missed.
Confirm before cancelling: every marketplace channel is disconnected from Ordoro, and no open orders remain unfulfilled in it.
Then cancel each app subscription individually — Shipping, Inventory, and Dropshipping are separate subscriptions, so cancelling one does not cancel the others. Check your next statement to confirm all three stopped.
Finally, compare your new run rate against the number you wrote down in step one. For a merchant who was on Ordoro's shipping and inventory apps together, that is several hundred dollars a month becoming $0 for shipping plus whatever modules you actually turned on.
