How to Package Fragile Items for Safe Shipping

Shipping fragile items does not have to mean broken items. Learn professional packing techniques that protect ceramics, glass, electronics, and delicate products.

What is the safest way to ship fragile items?

Double-box method: Wrap item in bubble wrap (2+ layers), place in snug inner box with padding, place inner box in larger outer box with 2-3" of cushioning all around. Item should not move when box is shaken. Mark "FRAGILE" and add shipping insurance for valuable items.

The Double-Box Method

Step 1 - Wrap the item: Cover completely in bubble wrap, using 2-3 layers for very fragile items. Secure with tape. All surfaces should be cushioned.

Step 2 - Inner box: Place wrapped item in a box that fits snugly with 1-2" of padding on all sides. Fill all voids with packing material. Item should not shift.

Step 3 - Outer box: Place the inner box inside a larger box with 2-3" of cushioning material between boxes on all sides. This creates a shock-absorbing buffer.

Cushioning Materials Compared

Bubble wrap: Best for wrapping items directly. Use small bubbles for delicate items, large bubbles for general padding. Essential for most fragile shipping.

Foam sheets/pouches: Excellent surface protection. Prevents scratches on electronics, frames, and finished surfaces. Layer over bubble wrap for best results.

Packing peanuts: Good for filling void space but items can shift. Best combined with wrapping materials, not as sole protection.

Air pillows: Lightweight void fill. Keep items centered but provide less cushioning than bubble wrap for direct impacts.

Packaging Specific Fragile Items

Ceramics/pottery: Wrap handles separately, fill hollow spaces with packing paper, use double-box method. Mark "FRAGILE - CERAMIC."

Glass items: Cover completely in bubble wrap, tape cardboard pieces over flat glass surfaces, use double-box with generous padding.

Electronics: Original packaging is best. Otherwise, wrap in anti-static material, then bubble wrap, place in fitted box.

Artwork/frames: Corner protectors are essential. Wrap entire piece, ship flat in picture boxes or between rigid cardboard sheets.

Pro Tips to Save More

1

Shake Test Your Package

If you can hear or feel contents moving, add more padding. Items should be completely immobile.

2

Reinforce Box Seams

Use H-tape method: tape across all seams and edges for maximum strength.

3

Use New Boxes

Used boxes lose up to 60% of their strength. Always use new boxes for fragile items.

4

Add Shipping Insurance

For items over $100, insurance costs $1-2 per $100 of value. Worth it for peace of mind.

5

Mark Multiple Sides as Fragile

Apply FRAGILE labels or stickers on at least 3 sides plus the top.

6

Photograph Before Sealing

Take photos of packed items as proof of proper packaging for insurance claims.

Frequently Asked Questions

Somewhat. Handlers may be more careful, but packages still go through automated sorting. Proper internal packaging is far more important than external labels.
Minimum 2 inches on all sides for standard fragile items. Very delicate items (thin glass, ceramics) need 3+ inches and double-boxing.
Yes, for anything valuable. USPS Priority includes $100 coverage. Additional insurance costs about $1-2 per $100 of declared value. Third-party insurers may offer better rates.
No carrier guarantees careful handling. UPS and FedEx have better claims processes for damage. USPS is cost-effective for lighter fragile items. Proper packaging matters more than carrier choice.
Yes, with proper packaging. Use bubble wrap, foam sheets, and cardboard protection. Double-box recommended. Many glass items ship successfully daily.
Wrap each item individually. Separate items with cardboard dividers or extra padding. No items should touch each other. Heavier items on bottom.
