Freight shipping FAQ
Common questions about LTL freight, freight class, and booking.
- How much does LTL freight cost?
- LTL freight typically runs $150–$800 per pallet, but the actual rate depends on lane (origin → destination), total weight, freight class (which is based on density), and accessorials like liftgate or residential delivery. Use the estimator above for live carrier rates on your specific lane.
- What is freight class and how do I find mine?
- Freight class is a 50–500 number set by the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC). Lower-density (lighter per cubic foot) freight gets a higher class and a higher rate. Our estimator auto-calculates class from your weight + dimensions, or you can select a commodity from the dropdown and we’ll pick the right class for you.
- Do I need a freight broker to book LTL?
- You don’t legally need one, but a broker like ShipWave gets you access to negotiated rates across dozens of carriers in a single quote — usually 15–40% cheaper than booking direct. We also handle pickup scheduling, BOL paperwork, and claims if anything goes wrong.
- What are accessorials and why do they matter?
- Accessorials are add-on services: liftgate (if you don’t have a dock), residential pickup/delivery, inside delivery, limited access (schools, farms, construction sites), and appointment requirements. Each adds $50–$200. If you skip them on your quote, the carrier will add them at the dock and your invoice will be higher than the quote.
- How long does LTL freight take?
- Most lanes deliver in 2–6 business days. Cross-country (NY → CA) is typically 5–7 days, regional moves (NY → PA, CA → AZ) are 1–3 days. Transit time is shown next to each rate in your quote.
- Can I book this rate online?
- Yes — click “Book this rate” after running a quote and our freight team will confirm pickup, send a BOL, and lock the rate in. We don’t auto-book without confirming pickup details with you first.
